Semana Santa, the Holy Week in Spain is the annual tribute of the Passion for Jesus Christ celebrated by Catholic fraternities (Spanish: cofradías).  During the last week of Lent, the week immediately before Easter, the streets are filled with processions that demonstrate elaborate and century-old sculptures such as the Holy Supper, the Judgement, or the Christ of Silence, which are carried on the shoulders of volunteers and accompanied by soulful music.

Christian or not, this tradition is something that won't leave you unimpressed. The emotion with which the processions are lived and the art that's behind the sculptures, their movement through narrow streets and the music is breath-taking.

On Palm Sunday five 'cofradías' (fraternities) parade through the streets of Granada. One of them, the procession of 'Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Sentencia and María Santísima de las Maravillas' passes right at the foot of the Alhambra.
